New research revealed a pear-shaped body, which is heavy in the hips, may be better for your health than an apple-shaped body, with more weight around the belly.
A study of diabetes patients found that increasing waist size is a stronger predictor of serious heart disease than body weight or body mass index.
According to Dr. Brent Muhlestein, a study author and co-director of research at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City, women are advised to maintain a waist size of 34 inches or less, while men should aim for 40 inches or less.
Exercise and diet remain foundations of treatment for those with apple shapes and obesity.
