Living in a city can be tough on birds, but according to a recent study the challenges have given them an advantage over their country counterparts.

Researchers working in Barbados found that urban bullfinches are smarter.

In tests, they were better than the rural birds at a number of problem-solving tasks, including opening drawers to get at food.

The team attributes such innovation to necessity.

In cities, bullfinches must make the most of what becomes available to them.
