DOUALA, CAMEROON — On March 12, a pregnant woman carrying twins was pronounced dead at a hospital in Cameroon. The scene that took place before her body was carted off was captured on video and began been circulating online over the weekend and created a firestorm on social media platforms.
In the footage, the woman lays lifeless on the ground, as someone reported to be a relative removes the unborn children and places them on her body. The woman was said to be seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
When the video was released online, social media users went ballistic, as word spread that the pregnant woman, Monique Koumate, was denied health care by hospital staff because the family couldn’t afford the medical fees.
The woman’s husband has since told news outlets his wife had died on the way to the hospital, and they were instructed by nurses to take her body to the mortuary. When they did, attendants at the mortuary said the woman’s unborn babies were still kicking inside the womb, and told the family to rush back to the hospital.
But when they arrived back at the hospital, the doors to the maternity ward were locked. In a rush to try to save the babies, a relative used a razor blade to perform an amateur emergency surgery to remove them herself. Neither of them survived.
In a statement, Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health disputed the notion that this tragedy occurred as a result of negligence by hospital staff.
Protests to seek justice for the woman and her babies are now taking place, as authorities investigate all parties who were involved during the incident.
