Mass shooting averted as Florida gunman's weapon jams

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA — One man was injured and another killed, but a mass shooting was avoided at a Florida stonemason's yesterday because the gunman's weapon jammed.

Jacksonville Granite employee James Cameau, 34, shot co-worker Dean Hagins in the buttocks before shooting himself dead, WLTV reported.

Cameau, who was employed by the company for less than a month, had been feeling despondent for the past few days, WLTV reported. He went home during his lunch break and returned to work carrying a semi-automatic pistol.

A mass shooting was averted, however, when Cameau tried to shoot colleagues at point-blank range, Undersheriff Craig Aldrich told a press conference, according to WLTV.

Cameau went around the back of the building and told 11 of his co-workers that they had better run. But his gun jammed twice when he tried to open fire.

The gun went off at the third attempt and Cameau then fired multiple shots, hitting vehicles but missing his co-workers.

Cameau chased Hagins into a nearby street and shot him in the buttocks.

Cameau then returned to the Jacksonville Granite building, where he shot himself dead in a security room as he watched police arrive at the scene on surveillance cameras, WLTV reported.

Hagins was taken to the hospital and was reported to be recovering.

Cameau's only prior arrests were for a DUI and driving without a license, Aldrich said, according to WLTV. He was unmarried and had no children.
