NORTH YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND — A 63-year-old man is dead after his home exploded in Haxby, near York, England. Police recently released the deceased man's name.

Paul Wilmott, a sound engineer at Leeds Beckett University, died Friday, Feb. 19. The explosion, which is still under investigation but has been suspected to be caused by a gas leak, turned Wilmott's home into a pile of rubble. The incident is currently being treated as an accident.

"My thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this incredibly sad time. This has been an utterly tragic incident and I would like to thank residents and members of the public for their co-operation and patience today," said Inspector Steve Breen from North Yorkshire Police in a statement. "Police have worked at the scene throughout the day, along with the Fire and Ambulance Service, York City Council and the utility companies, to get the investigation underway and secure the safety of residents and offer reassurance."

The explosion was reported around 7:30 a.m. The blast also caused damage to about 12 neighboring properties. North Yorkshire Police evacuated the local residents and isolated gas supplies. Emergency services worked with Northern Gas Networks to investigate the possible cause of the incident. An inquest is expected to open and adjourn on Feb. 25.

Wilmott, a father of one, is believed to have been alone in the house at the time.
