00:00But treatment must begin immediately and be kept up regularly.
00:05The disease is highly contagious, and you owe it to your family and to your shipmates as well as to yourself to take no chances.
00:14Report to your medical officer at once.
00:17He is qualified to diagnose and treat you properly, and your case will be followed until a cure is complete.
00:27The symptoms of the secondary stage will also disappear in time, even if neglected.
00:33But the disease is still present and now spreads to other, more vital parts of the body, where it may lurk unnoticed for many years.
00:42When it eventually reappears, however, it may cause ulcers of the skin or of the bones,
00:48damage to the heart or other serious circulatory disorders, rupture of the blood vessels of the brain or the spinal cord, paralysis, and insanity.
00:59No organ of the body is immune to attack, so don't delay seeking medical advice.
01:06Every moment that you do increases the danger to yourself and to others and reduces your chances of ever being cured.
01:14All of these diseases are preventable, and their prevention requires neither complicated equipment nor extensive technical knowledge.
01:23It's a matter of a few simple precautions plus a little ordinary common sense.
01:28First, there are several elementary facts to be kept in mind.
01:33Most prostitutes are infected.
01:36The average free pickup is also likely to be infected.
01:41Obviously then, the surest way to avoid venereal disease is to avoid sexual contact with all promiscuous women, whether they demand money or not.
01:52There are many places within a woman's sex organs in which germs may escape detection,
01:58in spite of repeated examinations by even a competent physician.
02:03For this reason, any medical certificate which a prostitute may produce is worthless.
02:10Moreover, she may easily have become infected half an hour after her examination.
02:16But if, despite this danger, you should expose yourself, there are preventive measures which will diminish the risk.
02:25The most effective single method is the condom or rubber sheath,
02:30which, when correctly placed on the penis, acts as a shield between it and the hidden germs.
02:37The condom must be perfect.
02:40A single pinhole renders it worthless.
02:44Extreme care is necessary in the use of the condom.
02:48Roll it on the penis with about half an inch left loose at the tip to guard against tearing.
02:56If a lubricant is desired, use a non-oily one, such as Surgeon's Jelly,
03:03for oily substances destroy rubber very quickly.
03:07Do not use Vaseline or other petroleum products.
03:12In removing the condom, remember that the outside may have millions of germs on it
03:18if the woman is infected, and is therefore very dangerous.
03:23Roll or pull it off, turning it inside out in the process.
03:28The germs are thus kept inside, where they can do no harm.
03:34But there are many vulnerable points not protected by even the best condom.
03:40Any point of contact may become infected.
03:43In this case, the chancre appeared at an unprotected spot.
03:48So the condom alone, without further precautions, is never enough,
03:53and it is essential that additional protective measures be taken.
03:59The first step in prophylaxis is to urinate.
04:03The stream of urine forces from the urethra many of the germs that may have entered it.
04:09Next, wash thoroughly with soap and water the penis, the scrotum, the pubic hair,
04:16the inside of the thigh, the belly, the hands,
04:21and any other part of the body that may have come in contact with the secretions of the woman
04:26or the outside of the condom.
04:29Do not forget, it is most important to pull back the foreskin
04:34and wash thoroughly underneath it.
04:38After carefully drying the penis,
04:40use one of the individual prophylactic tubes available at the sick bay
04:44unless you can get prophylactic treatment at a regular shore station
04:48or at the sick bay within an hour.
04:51Since these tubes are effective only when properly used,
04:55you must be sure to follow the directions carefully.
05:01First, inject into the urethra about half of the contents of the tube,
05:05grasping the head of the penis at once to prevent escape of the ointment.
05:10Second, massage the penis for at least three minutes
05:14so as to spread the ointment thoroughly over the inside walls of the urethra.
05:19This is necessary because of the many tiny pockets and recesses
05:24on its interior surface in which germs may escape the ointment.
05:29Third, rub the remainder of the ointment over the entire length of the penis,
05:35around its base, the front of the scrotum, and over the groins.
05:41Be sure to pull back the foreskin and rub the ointment in well under it
05:46and around the G-string.
05:48Rub the ointment into the penis itself for five minutes.
05:54Allow the ointment within the penis to remain four or five hours
05:59or until it becomes necessary to urinate.
06:02The ointment on the outside of the penis and the surrounding parts
06:06should be allowed to remain for twelve hours.
06:10Wrap the penis in the waxed paper provided with the tube
06:15to avoid soiling your clothes.
06:18If you use a good condom, together with chemical prophylaxis,
06:23your chances of avoiding venereal diseases are far better than if they are omitted.
06:28But remember, prophylaxis must be administered immediately following exposure
06:35and after every exposure, not merely the last one.
06:40The germs won't wait and neither can you.
06:46Research has shown that the value of prophylaxis diminishes rapidly
06:50the longer you wait.
06:52After two hours, your chances of getting a venereal disease
06:55are more than seven times as great as after one hour.
06:59And after five hours, you are eighteen times as likely to become infected.
07:07This prophylactic routine, together with the condom,
07:10should be carefully employed.
07:13But if for any reason you are unable to follow this procedure in every detail,
07:18report as soon as possible to the dispensary, sick bay,
07:22or shore prophylactic station.
07:24This is most important.
07:28At the station, you are given a complete prophylaxis
07:31by a trained hospital corpsman.
07:35The first step in a station prophylaxis
07:38is a thorough washing with soap and water.
07:41This kills many germs that may still be on the surface of the skin.
07:45A silver preparation is then used as a preventive of gonorrhea.
07:54This is usually protargol or argyrol
07:57and should be held in the urethra at least five minutes.
08:03It is followed by the application of calomel ointment,
08:07a mercury compound used in the prevention of syphilis.
08:10This treatment is simple and painless
08:14but should be taken directly following exposure for maximum effect.
08:24These prophylactic stations are available at Army or Marine Corps barracks,
08:29at shore stations, and on board ship.
08:32They are put there for you.
08:34Use them for your protection.
08:37You have the facts.
08:39We've told you everything of importance about these diseases.
08:44To sum up briefly,
08:46continence is the only sure way to avoid infection.
08:50However, if you do expose yourself,
08:53use a good condom
08:55and follow it by immediate and thorough prophylaxis.
09:00Don't get drunk and carelessly expose yourself without protection.
09:05A drunken man loses his sense of judgment
09:08and foolishly takes chances he wouldn't think of taking when he is sober.
09:12But if you should contract a venereal disease,
09:16don't try to conceal it.
09:18For an untreated venereal disease is extremely dangerous
09:23to your shipmates, to your family,
09:26and to yourself and your future.
09:30The Navy supplies you with expert medical attention.
09:34It does everything possible to safeguard and preserve your health.
09:39But it's up to you to use your own common sense.
09:43Take advantage of this,
09:45for no one can help you if you will not help yourself.
