Experts Are Puzzled By Surge In Strange Birth Defect

The CDC has released a report describing the surge in a serious birth defect called gastroschisis where a baby’s intestines can protrude through the abdominal wall.

A serious birth defect is surging among certain U.S. populations, and the cause has not yet been identified. 
The condition is called gastroschisis which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, describes as “a serious congenital defect in which the intestines protrude through an opening in the abdominal wall.” 
A recent study by the agency found that non-Hispanic black mothers under the age of 20 were the most affected group, with a 263 percent surge between 1995 and 2012.
