This darkly compelling documentary series tells the stories of some of Britain's most high-profile murder cases in forensic and chillingly accurate detail.
Pinpointing the trigger moment, each film charts the last days leading up to these horrific killings, counting down to the murder from the perspective of both murderer and victim.
The series uses dramatic reconstruction, exclusive personal testimonies from witnesses, detailed crime reports, forensic evidence and expert commentary from criminologists, detectives, pathologists and journalists.
Examining days, hours and minutes from this dual perspective provides a complete psychological analysis of unfolding events as the lives of killer and victim collide.
This opening episode focuses on former royal aide Jane Andrews, who bludgeoned and stabbed to death her millionaire boyfriend in a vicious act of revenge after he told her that he would never propose. The obsessive and jealous Andrews had desperately wanted to resume the high life that she had once enjoyed as the Duchess of York's personal dresser. Everything had depended on her wealthy boyfriend, Tommy Cressman. When he rejected her, she snapped – with deadly consequences.
From humble origins as the daughter of a carpenter and social worker, Andrews achieved a position within the highest social circles. At the age of 21, her dream came true when she became the Duchess of York's dresser after replying to an advert in The Lady magazine. But after ten years, the role was terminated due to cost-cutting.
Deprived of the job she loved, Andrews was soon on anti-depressants and her golden-brown hair, once dyed red in imitation of her former boss, began to fall out in clumps.
Then, on New Year's Eve, 1998, Andrews met dashing millionaire's son Tom Cressman – the ultimate eligible bachelor. His status and group of friends would guarantee Andrews the lavish lifestyle she still desired. From the start, however, the relationship was plagued by arguments, tantrums and bickering, which steadily grew worse. When Andrews discovered that Cressman was not going to marry her, she realised that her plans for a future with him were in ruins.
As her boyfriend slept that night, Andrews stripped naked to avoid staining her clothes with blood and stood before his bed clutching a knife and his cricket bat. She bludgeoned him with the bat then stabbed him in the chest. As he lay dying, she pulled out the knife and stabbed him in the chest again to finish him off.
