Unnecessary three million yuan giant gold-painted Chairman Mao statue towers over Henan

HENAN, CHINA — Apparently there weren't enough Mao Zedong statues in China already.
A new statue of the dictator stands over Tongzu county in Henan province. It is nearly 37 meters high, is made from steel and concrete and is painted in gold. It cost as much as 3 million yuan (about US$460,000) to build, and was financed with local businessmen's money. Some villagers also contributed to the effigy.
It will be the second tallest statue in the country that honors Chairman Mao.
Meanwhile, the province where the giant, expensive effigy went up was also the centre of a famine in the 1950s that killed millions of people — a famine which was the result of Mao's policies.
Many people online criticized the statue not just because it doesn't even look like Mao, but because the money invested could have been used to address some of the country's more urgent issues.
Others, however, say it was a very clever business investment, which they say will attract a lot of tourists and boost the village's economy.
According to China Files, which counted all Mao's statues across the country, there are more than 20 Maos in the Beijing and Hunan areas, between 20 and 50 in Hebei and Shandong provinces, and more than 50 in Henan and the surroundings areas.
