Nasir Jones (born September 14, 1973), known simply as Nas, formerly Nasty Nas, is an American rapper.
Son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas is well known for his 1994 debut album Illmatic, which many consider to be one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.[1] This album established Nas as one of hip-hop's most profound lyricist, introducing his signature poetic style. Raised in the notorious Queensbridge housing projects in New York City, he represents a continuation of a hip-hop tradition in Queensbridge that has spanned through early hip-hop, including the Juice Crew, Marley Marl, and MC Shan.
Nigger is the ninth studio album by rapper Nas and is expected to be released on December 11, 2007 in the United States.
Initially, Nigga was given as the title by Nas several times, including an October 12, 2007 performance at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City on where announced the title and release date, which was confirmed by a source close to the project the next day. Def Jam Recordings made no comment on the title. This was similar to attempts to name his 2006 album—eventually titled Hip Hop Is Dead—both "Nigga" and "Hip Hop Is Dead...The N".
Nas states that he hasn't faced any opposition from Def Jam over the title of the album, although he says the album will be called Nigger instead of Nigga and will be released on December 11, 2007.
L.A. Reid, chairman of Def Jam Records, has confirmed that Def Jam fully backs Nas and his decision on naming his album. The album's title has received support from Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, LL Cool J, Rev Run, Common, Akon, Method Man and others. While former rival rapper, 50 Cent said Nas is going for "shock value" with the controversial album name.
