Volkswagen engineers admit to manipulating emissions data

Perhaps the 20-person estimate of people responsible for VW's growing emissions scandal isn't so small after all.
According to German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, Volkswagen engineers have admitted to tampering with emissions data of the brand's cars. Engineers reportedly tampered with vehicles during testing, including over-inflating tires and adding diesel fuel to engine oil that allowed the engines to run more smoothly, thereby using less fuel.
It was these alterations that caused the newly admitted additional 800,000 diesel and gasoline cars with emissions "irregularities" in Europe that the Volkswagen Group estimates will cost it $2.19 billion dollars.
