General elections a key test for Burma's democratic transition

Burma is preparing for historic elections, the first since the junta staged its own dissolution in 2011. However the military have refused to fully relinquish their grip on power, retaining at least a quarter of the parliament's seats. The constitution has also been modified to prevent pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president. If the popularity of her party translates into electoral success, this could be the start of yet another period of political uncertainty in Burma.
