Obama flip flops on Syria, sends special forces to help fight ISIS

SYRIA — The White House on Friday announced the deployment of "less than 50" special operations forces to northern Syria as part of the U.S. strategy to confront ISIS, according to a Reuters report.

The first contingent of troops, which will be making their way to Syria from a U.S. base in Irbil, Iraq, will comprise some two dozen soldiers.

U.S. officials reportedly stressed that the special forces troops are not meant to engage in front-line combat alongside U.S.-supported rebels, according to Reuters.

If they come under fire from enemy forces, however, the soldiers have the right to engage.

The U.S. also plans to deploy A-10 and F-15 fighter jets to Incirlik Air Base in Turkey as part of the effort, according to a CNN report.

The notable turnaround comes despite a strongly worded commitment by U.S. president Barack Obama not to deploy ground forces in Syria.

"I will not put American boots on the ground in Syria," said Obama during a September 2013 televised national address, according to the Federalist.

The move also follows last week's killing of an American soldier during a Kurdish-led mission to save prisoners held by the Islamic State as well as Russia's entrance into the military fray earlier this month.
