Haitian Elections Generally Peaceful But Country Faces Major Problems

Haitians went to the polls on Sunday to chose the successor to President Michel Martelly from among 54 candidates. Results will not be available another week. Violence was a major concern, but the vote was largely peaceful. However, Haiti continues to be plagued by seemingly insurmountable problems, exacerbated by the failure of promised aid to reach the country after the devastating 2010 earthquake.
