How An Earthquake Can Trigger Others Far Away
  • 9 years ago
A new study has found that one large earthquake can trigger other trembles thousands of miles away due a change in the elasticity of the Earth’s crust; the team linked an 8.6 magnitude event in the Indian Ocean in 2012 with seismic activity recorded in Japan soon thereafter.

An earthquake can cause smaller quakes to happen in other parts of the world far away, according to a new study.
Researchers believe this chain reaction can happen when seismic waves travel through rock in the Earth’s crust and alter the elasticity.
As a result, the tectonic plates are able to slide more easily and trigger an earthquake in an already vulnerable area.
