SCARECROW scene – 'The Singing Detective' BBC TV series (Episode 6, 21 Dec 1986)

The Singing Detective was a BBC television serial drama, written by Dennis Potter, which starred Michael Gambon and was directed by Jon Amiel. The six episodes were "Skin", "Heat", "Lovely Days", "Clues", "Pitter Patter" and "Who Done It".
This footage is taken from episode 6 titled "Who Done It" that was aired on BBC TV on 21 December 1986: The young Philip Marlow returns to the country railway station following his mother's death in London. Forty years on, Marlow the hospital patient still dreams about the homecoming and the frightening figure of the scarecrow that now erupts into the ward.
This particular scene was the inspiration behind Severin's "Scarecrow" song from Siouxsie & The Banshees 'PEEPSHOW' LP of 1988. "Scarecrow" was apparently one of the earliest songs to be written for the album, probably in the spring of 1987, along with the hit singles "Peek-A-Boo" and "The Killing Jar".

This song was inspired by a scene in (Dennis) Potter's masterpiece 'The Singing Detective' where the child narrator sees a scarecrow from the window of a speeding train. (Angela) Carter's 'The Bloody Chamber' made me want to write it as a modern fairy-tale…"
The song of this video footage is "After You've Gone" by Al Jolson with Matty Malneck's Orchestra and The Four Hits and a Miss.
