We have had three failed wet seasons so far -Sept, 2015- and the Burdekin River is carrying very little water. Lots of vegetation have been growing on what used to be its riverbed. A few metres away, the landscape is so dry that appears to have been burnt. Kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots and other wildlife are dying of starvation by the thousands. Farmers and graziers are facing one of their greatest challenge: how to survive until the next rainy season. It's a very alarming and desperate situation indeed.
