This episode of the Longines Chronoscope with Frank Knight featured Joseph R. Farrington, United States Delegate from Hawaii. Farrington comes to the show promoting booming businesses and vast growth in Hawaii. There has been a great deal of growth in the National Defense and tourism industries. Military spending is still the largest source of income for the islands. The next three biggest industries are sugar cane, pineapples, and tourism. Hawaii has undergone a power struggle within its borders. The former power, Big 5, from the New England area, have been replaced with the left wing unions. The shipping unions have gained a lot of power recently and might be considered the most powerful unions in Hawaii. There is currently a large push for statehood within Hawaii. There is opposition about this from southern state senators who would like to keep traditional ideas in the congress and keep left-wing Hawaii out of congress. Hawaii saw no loyalty problems during the Second World War. The people of Hawaii love both Hawaii and the United States as a whole. They are a unique people in that there are many races united under the same flag. It is generally thought that the addition of Hawaii as a state would promote the US in the pacific area.
