Housed at the centre of the GOCE satellite, is the 'gradiometer' instrument - 100 times more sensitive than any sensor of the same type previously flown in space. The gradiometer contains three pairs of proof masses and all experience the gravitational acceleration of Earth slightly differently because of their different positions in the gravitational field, as Rune Floberghagen explains.
