Crunchy Baby Wasps aka Hachinoko - Why Would You Eat That?

Everyone likes high-protein snacks! You got your nuts, your jerky, and of course, your insects. And the very highness protein of insects is Hachinoko, or wasp pupae. Maybe wasp larvae. All the wasps that couldn’t escape, pretty much!

Hachinoko has been a favorite in Japan ever since it was a favorite of their esteemed emperor. Today, the pupal wasps are served up in a mixture of sugar and soy sauce. Or deep fried. Which, let’s face it, is a pretty good way to prepare pretty much anything, really. The result is a sweet, salty, kinda smoky… but also wet and crunchy dish that won’t sting you. Promise!
