Colombia Takes New Cautious Steps Toward Peace

As Colombia celebrated its Independence Day yesterday, new steps to end the country's armed conflict were taken. The one-month unilateral ceasefire declared by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) entered into effect on Monday. While not accepting the rebel's call for a bilateral ceasefire, President Juan Manuel Santos announced that the government would be taking measures to deescalate the conflict, a move welcomed by civil society.
