Transcript
00:00She's not like the other autistic children. She's deeply contented. And there is something.
00:09She's formed a new attachment. A volunteer girl, Suzanne. That's good.
00:13Please, save the speeches. I know all about it.
00:16Three years and what the hell have you accomplished? Nothing.
00:19Where's the breakthrough we used to dream about?
00:21Where's just one inch of improvement?
00:23Where's just one word out of Dorothy's own mouth? Tell me that.
00:26I don't think you understand.
00:28I understand plenty more than you think.
00:31It kills me to admit it, but she's retarded, that's all.
00:34And none of your fancy psychological jargon is going to change that.
00:37But nothing could be further from the truth.
00:39Tell me about the truth.
00:42The truth is you're right about the fancy jargon. None of it applies to Dorothy.
00:46She doesn't fit any of the pigeon holes.
00:48In other words, you haven't the slightest idea what's wrong with her.
00:51Look, that's just it. There's really nothing wrong with her.
00:54She's a wonderful girl. We know from her play that she's unbelievably bright.
00:58But she just won't communicate. No words.
01:01She has her own way, and by God, she seems happy that way.
01:05There's no name for that condition. You make one up if you like.
01:09Dorothy is one of a kind. Do you understand that?
01:12She is absolutely unique.
01:17Helen, look.
01:25My youth?
01:28Now, you don't really want to hear about my youth, do you?
01:31You ever eat Tom Sawyer?
01:34Well, it wasn't anything like that at all.
01:37Except when I grew up on the river.
01:40Pike County, Missouri.
01:43And let me tell you, we were poor.
01:46Hurt and poor.
01:48The kind of poor you could only understand if you went without real food for a couple of days.
01:53God, I wanted so much more.
01:56And I got it.
01:59Yes, I did.
02:02You think I set my goals impossibly high.
02:05But that's a secret.
02:08And it works. I put on those blinders.
02:11I tell you, you put them on.
02:14The tunnel vision, you see nothing else.
02:17You work your tail off.
02:20You push and you run and you even crawl if you have to.
02:23And then someday you take the time to turn around and look back.
02:26And you realize that you've come an incredibly long way.
02:32You've reached your goals.
02:40My column is syndicated in 473 cities.
02:43I write my own editorials on network television.
02:46I own two newspapers and three TV stations.
02:49But I must admit something.
02:52Confidentially.
02:55You know, it's funny.
02:58But I still don't feel any closer to that style than I did as a dumb kid in Pike County.
