The Revolution Is a Young Man's Fight
The Society of the Cincinnati - Carnegie Institution for Science
The American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati is pleased to announce that Professor John Anthony Ruddiman of Wake Forest University will present the inaugural Catesby Jones Lecture on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 6:30 pm.
In his new book, Becoming Men of Some Consequence: Youth and Military Service in the Revolutionary War, Professor Ruddiman argues that the experience of young soldiers in the Revolutionary War was shaped by their drive to achieve personal independence and autonomy. The war offered an entire generation of young men unusual opportunities for social advancement, honor and distinction, but diverted those who served from the established path through young adulthood. Professor Ruddiman received research support for the project from the Society of the Cincinnati and conducted research in the Society of the Cincinnati library.
Becoming Men of Some Consequence was published by the University of Virginia Press in December 2014 and is already one of the most widely discussed books on the American Revolution to appear in several years. Anyone interested in the experience of the remarkable generation of young men who won our independence should read this thoughtful, carefully researched, and gracefully written book.
