A Picture of Modern Snakes’ Ancient Ancestors
  • 9 years ago
New research has been able to determine some of the behaviors and habits of modern snakes’ ancient ancestors including that they were likely land-based, nocturnal, and had hind legs.

A new study offers a clearer picture of modern snakes’ first ancestors which are thought to have evolved about 128.5 million years ago.
Researchers believe the reptiles were most likely land-based nocturnal creatures that had small hind legs with ankles and toes.
Though the legs likely weren’t used for walking and eventually disappeared in most, evidence of these limbs still exist in the skeletons of pythons and boas today.
It is also thought that the snakes likely lived in Southern Hemisphere forests which contradict theories of a water-based habitat.
