New York's subway authority MTA has begun testing a massive inflatable subway tunnel plug designed to combat flooding, such as that experienced during Hurricane Sandy.
The 30-foot-long, 14-foot-diameter plug was tested in an unused subway tunnel on Wednesday, according to the New York Daily News.
The inflatable subway plug can be inserted into a tunnel and inflated within 30 minutes to protect the subway system and crucial infrastructure such as signals, switches and electrical relays from water damage.
The plug is made of three layers, including a polyurethane inner and two toughened outer layers of Vectran. Once inflated, the air pressure creates friction that holds the plug in place.
Eight tunnels were flooded during Hurricane Sandy in October resulting in billions of dollars worth of damage.
