Gardener kills British mother on her birthday in Turkey shooting

A British woman celebrating her birthday in Turkey was shot dead by her gardener in a fit of passion.

Catherine Bury was celebrating her birthday with her family at her house in the Turkish coastal town of Dalyan, when the gardener, who claims to have been sleeping with Bury, chased her up the stairs and shot her four times. Her son and mother were also caught up in the incident and suffered serious gunshot wounds.

The alleged killer had been arrested only days earlier on suspicion of making death threats to the woman, but was later released.

Miss Bury was celebrating her 56th birthday at her six-bedroom poolside villa in the popular resort town of Dalyan with her mother Cecilia, 86, and son Alex, 23.

Two days earlier, she had been in touch with a branch of the Turkish military about the apparent threats, so when the man was released from custody the next day he appeared at the villa to conduct the attack.

The suspect allegedly first shot Miss Bury's mother in the back and her son in the leg before pursuing the woman at the top of the stairs of her home.

She locked herself in the bathroom but the attacker allegedly shot his way through the door and blasted her four times as she lay on the floor. She died at the scene.
