Thirteen people, including a 3-year-old child, were shot in a South Side park in Chicago on Thursday night.

Police told local media that the child was the most seriously wounded, having suffered a gunshot that hit his ear and exited through his mouth. A total of 13 people, including the boy, two teens and 10 adults were injured.

The shootings took place on a basketball court on Cornell Square Park near Wood Street. Ambulances arrived until about half an hour after the shootings took place, as injured people were brought out of the park on stretchers. Soon after, about 60 police officers were on the scene.

Witness Julian Harris told the Chicago Sun-Times that men fired at him from a gray sedan before turning toward Cornell Square Park and firing at people in the area. He said his 3-year-old nephew was the boy wounded in the cheek.

"They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house," Harris said. "They've been coming round here looking for people to shoot every night, just gang-banging stuff. It's what they do."

No one had yet been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, authorities said.
