Helicopter pilot Carl Enlow killed by spinning rotor

Helicopter pilot, Carl Enlow, was killed Friday evening after walking into a helicopter's spinning rotor at the Bloomsburg Fair in Pennsylvania. The 79-year-old pilot who is said to have flown helicopters for 50 years, including time in the military, had just finished his shift taking fairgoers for tours. Another pilot came to take the next shift and while they were refuelling the helicopter during the transition, Enlow lost his hat. When he tried to grab it, the spinning rotor hit him.

The incident happened just after 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot, near Gate 5 at the fairgrounds. It was the last day of this year's event.

Enlow was transported by Life Flight, a helicopter service, to the Geisinger Medical center in Danville, where he was pronounced dead. Local publications reported that Enlow had flown helicopters at the fair for many years and was well-known and liked. Last year he fulfilled a 6-year-old cancer patient's dream by taking her on a helicopter tour at the fair.

The PA Homepage reported that all profits made from the helicopter rides will go to Enlow's widow.

According to the Associated Press, Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn told the Bloomsburg Press-Enterprise, a local publication, that Enlow's death is under investigation.

Heritage Rotors, which runs the rides at the fair, has been operating since 1993. The Bloomsburg Fair, which ran from September 21-28 this year, is a popular attraction in the area and is the largest fair in the northeast. It has been operating for 158 years.
