Human body parts found in LA sewage treatment plants

Murder? Human remains found: Police believe body parts found at two separate water treatment facilities in Los Angeles in the past several days are from the same woman.

On Saturday maintenance workers at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant on South Figueroa Street in Carson found the severed pelvis and both legs of a woman.

Then on Monday in a reclamation pool at the San Jose Water Reclamation Plant on Workman Mill Road in Bassett, workers investigating a blockage made a second gruesome find — the partially submerged torso of a woman. Firefighters discovered the head still attached, but badly mangled. The body's left arm was missing.

The two sewage treatment centers are 23 miles apart. Authorities say the severed remains must have traveled through underground pipes that link the Bassett site with the Carson plant, adding that the woman would have only been able to wind up in the system via entry through a sewer line opening or a manhole.

Investigators, who say the woman is probably Hispanic, are now treating the case as a homicide.

"People don't just fall into a manhole cover," said County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Rosson.
