At least 30 Haitian migrants were killed when the overloaded boat they were traveling in capsized in waters off the Bahamas on Monday (November 25), according to a Bahamas official. The 12-metre-long (40 ft) vessel was reportedly carrying over 100 people on board when it ran aground and capsized near Staniel Bay.

When a Coast Guard helicopter arrived, officials found the vessel near Scrub Cay, about 20 miles from where it was first seen by a fisherman. Up to 60 people were clinging to the boat, 30 more people were in the water, and at least 10 bodies could be seen from the helicopter.

The boat had been at sea for about nine days before it capsized.

Rescue helicopters dropped food, inflatable life rafts and supplies as the survivors awaited rescue. an MH-60 helicopter rescued 13 migrants from the scene, while a 108-ft patrol boat operated by the Royal Bahamian Defense Force picked up the rest of the survivors on Tuesday morning, according to officials.

Migrants in the area often pass through the Bahamas in unsafe and overloaded boats trying to reach the United States.
