Sucker Punch: SantaCon brawl stars six wasted Santas

New York City's SantaCon kicked off on Saturday in freezing temperatures and pouring snow amid widespread criticism that the pub crawl event has become too rowdy. A group of men, believed to be a part of SantaCon, were caught on video fighting each other near Union Square.

SantaCon is the costumed holiday season bar crawl that has grown larger and naughtier with each passing year. The event kicked off on Saturday morning at Tompkins Square Park in the East Village, where a few hundred early drinkers got together for a pre-bar game of kickball. Some longtime participants said that this was the first time they could remember snow at the bar crawl.

"This is real street theater and I'm a fan of that," said Sidney Oolongo, 37, who was attending his 10th SantaCon. Oolongo sees the event as a way for guerilla artists to express themselves and dismisses those that think it is just a day to drink yourself silly. "It's that. But it's also creative costumes. It's also people hanging out with friends and having a good time."

A group of men wearing Santa suits got into a fight near Union Square that was caught on camera Saturday night, police said. NYPD spokesman Sgt. Lee Jones said that the cops were investigating after the video was posted to YouTube. Jones also said, "We don't have any reported assaults right now. We know about it."

The fight involved about 10 men. Six were dressed as Santa and four others dressed in regular clothes. The fight took place at the corner of 17th St. and Third Ave. around 8:15pm, Jones said.
