At least 29 people were killed in a car bomb attack in northeast Nigeria on Tuesday.

The blast took place near a market in Maiduguri, in Nigeria's northeastern Borno State at around lunchtime. The market was packed with people as it was a public holiday in Nigeria. It was reported that a suicide bomber drove a Honda car filled with explosives and detonated it near a post office in the market area.

The area was thrown into panic as people tried to flee the scene. At least 29 people were killed in the explosion, but authorities expect the figure to rise. Citing an army spokesman Muhammad Dole, AFP reported that ten vehicles and five three-wheel motorised rickshaws were destroyed in the explosion.

According to local news website Osun Defender, Jihadist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the attack. The militant group, which has been declared a terrorist group by the United States, has been conducting a violence campaign pushing for Islamic rule in the north of Nigeria. It has a track record of attacking schools, churches, military and government buildings in the past four years.
