Drug lord Nazario Moreno Gonzalez, known as "The Craziest One" and thought to have died in 2010, was killed on the morning of Sunday March 9 in Mexico's Michoacan state.
Moreno had been hiding in the mountainous areas of Michoacan since he was declared dead by the Mexican government, SDP Noticias reported.
On March 9, 2014, Moreno left his wooden hut on a donkey. According to SDP noticias, he was carrying two letters, one addressed to his daughter and one to God. The content of the letters, classified as reserved information, has not been revealed by authorities.
As he was riding his mule, he was stopped by Mexican marines and soldiers, who asked him to turn around. Instead he opened fire.
The marines fired back killing him. According to officials, at the time of his death Moreno was wearing a medallion with a red cross, a symbol of the pseudo-religious Knights Templar gang, a powerful cartel cited by U.S. law enforcement officials as a major source of methamphetamine in the United States.
After his death, authorities searched his hut where they found a king size bed, a flat screen television, other two televisions and several books.
The BBC reported that Moreno's killing is a second major success for the government's campaign against the drugs trade within a month.
The Michoacan state, also known as the 'tierra caliente,' has been a hotspot for drug cartel activity in recent months.
