Mexican police kill drug lord announced as dead three years ago

A Mexican drug lord who had been declared dead once before by authorities, then was believed to be alive, has apparently been killed in a shootout with police.

Known as “El Mas Loco” or “The Craziest One”, Nazario Moreno led a criminal gang in the western state of Michoacan.

He had converted to Christianity in the United States in the 1980s and spread his version of the gospel, claiming his troops were good Christians even if they smuggled drugs.

The government announced he had been killed in 2010 in a firefight, but his body was never found. He was widely believed to still be alive with sightings of him in Michoacan.

Government security spokesman Alejandro Rubido explained: “On December 10 of 2010, it was announced that in a confrontation the day before between federal forces and a criminal group that operates in Michoacan, Nazario Moreno Gonzalez had been taken down.
