St Louis police are attracting some unwanted attention this week for beating a mentally ill man who was resisting arrest. Part of the arrest was captured on video by family members on March 21.
Officers responded to a call from Mario Crump's family who reported him acting strangely and requested that he be removed from the house around 11:30pm. The 30-second video shows the officers beating the 47-year-old as he kicks them in an attempt to resistant.
"Just go with them, Mario," say family members heard urging him to comply with authorities. "Mario, just cooperate."
The officers spent 15 to 20 minutes at the Crump household and stopped their use of force upon Crump's eventual compliance.
Crump has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. "At 11:30 at night, when you call 911, there aren't any psychologists coming," said Police Chief Sam Dotson in an interview.
Crump has been charged with resisting arrest and two counts of third-degree assault on a law enforcement officer. He has more than 20 prior arrests including several assault charges.
