Oscar Pistorius appeared to be struggling when trying to fend off attacks from lead prosecutor Gerrie Nel on the third day of his cross-examination.

The trial continued to cover minuscule details on the night when the Olympic sprinter shot dead his supermodel girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius said after adjusting two fans, he had tried to cover an amplifier light with Steenkamp's jeans. He dropped the jeans after hearing a noise from the toilet.

In a photo taken by the police, however, the jeans were on top of the grey duvet. Nel argued that if Pistorius was correct and police moved things around, the jeans should have been underneath the duvet, not on top of it.

Scared of intruders, Pistorius said he had whispered to Steenkamp to get down and call the police before grabbing a pistol from underneath the bed.

Pistorius said he had been screaming while walking along the passage to the bathroom, but had stopped at the entrance of the bathroom. Nel said it would be unlikely for Steenkamp to remain silent at this point, since she was only three metres away from the athlete.

The Olympic sprinter first said Steenkamp had not screamed at all when he fired four shots, but later conceded that he was not sure because his ears had been ringing after the loud shots.

During the cross-examination, Gel had repeatedly called Pistorius a liar. He suggested that Steenkamp had been standing inside the toilet as she had been scared of Pistorius.
