Nine female acrobats were seriously injured in an accident during an aerial performance of the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus at Rhode Island on Sunday.

The accident occurred as eight female performers were dangling from a frame by their hair like a "human chandelier.

The performers were dangling around 35-40 feet above the ground when a spokesman said the frame came free from the metal truss it was connected to, causing the acrobats to fall to the floor, where they landed on a dancer below.

Nine of the performers were seriously injured, including the dancer on the floor, although none of the injuries were said to be life threatening.

A spokesman for the circus said an investigation was being carried out.
