Davis Colley, 16, died after jumping into the icy waters of Minnesota's Eagle Lake on Friday.

He was taking part in what's known as a "cold-water challenge," the growing social media trend in which people are nominated either to jump into a cold body of water or donate money to charity.

Friends said Colley texted his girlfriend earlier that evening, telling her that he was going to jump into the lake near the city of Norwood Young America. Friends said they were unsure why Colley would go to the lake by himself.

Carver County deputies received a report of a drowning teen around 7:30 p.m. but didn't find Colley's body until 11 p.m.

Police hope the tragedy will serve as a warning to anyone else considering whether to take the cold-water challenge.

A fund has been set up to raise funds for the Colley family. Those who would like to donate can send checks to the Colley Family Fund, attn. Michelle, Citizens State Bank, P.O. Box 789, Norwood Young America, 55368.
