The Islamic militants who took over cities and territory across Iraq last week have posted photos and video online that appear to depict the mass execution of Iraqi soldiers.

The militant group captured Iraq's second largest city, Mosul last week and have been advancing southwards towards the capital Baghdad.

The militant group is said to have at least 15,000 fighters while the Iraqi government is believed to command about 930,000 US-trained and US-armed security personnel.

Iran, meanwhile, has reportedly sent 2,000 advance troops to Iraq in the past 48 hours to help tackle the insurgency.

The US is reportedly considering airstrikes against strategic ISIS targets. MQ-1 Predators, outfitted with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, are well-equipped to take out moving targets while MQ-9 Reapers, can carry precision-guided 500-pound bombs, which could take out ISIS camps and depots.

The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea and the guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun was ordered to the Persian Gulf on Saturday.

Unmanned and unarmed RQ-4 Global Hawk drones have been used to track ISIS moves in Iraq in recent weeks, NBC News reported.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria has vowed to establish a unified Islamic government stretching from western Syria across Iraq to the eastern border with Iran. So far 188,000 people including combatants have reportedly died for their vision.
