Taiwan plane crash: 48 dead as Kaohsiung-Pengu flight slams into village on 2nd landing attempt

A flight operated by Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways crashed into a village near the main airport on Taiwan’s outlying island chain of Penghu on Wednesday evening, killing 48 and injuring a dozen others.

Witnesses on the ground said they saw sparks or a fireball at about 7.10 p.m., just before the plane fell out of the sky.

The plane then reportedly hit a wall located at the end of the runway at MaGong Airport, before crashing into a small village just beyond the airport. Five people on the ground were injured.

Two of the passengers on board were French citizens, with one reportedly in serious condition.

A powerful typhoon had affected all of Taiwan on Wednesday and the flight to Penghu had been delayed due to weather conditions. Taiwan’s aviation authorities said, however, that conditions and visibility at the runway in Penghu were safe for landing. An investigation is underway.
