Abigail Hernandez, the 15-year-old girl who had been held captive for nine months, made an appearance at the Conway Circuit Court, New Hampshire on Tuesday.
The girl arrived at the court alongside her mother and sister. Hernandez’s appearance was a surprise to everyone, as her mother told NBC News that Hernandez would not attend the hearing.
Abigail Hernandez mysteriously disappeared on October 9 last year. She was last spotted walking home from school. In an interview with the Daily Mail, James Campbell, the father of Hernandez’s boyfriend, said that his son saw the girl while he was riding a bus and tried to disembark, but was stopped by the driver.
Hernandez told investigators Nathaniel Kibby, aged 34, took her into his navy blue pickup truck while driving on North-South Road, the Boston Globe reported.
Hernandez’s mother said she received a letter from her daughter in November last year. Authorities believed the girl could have run away, but was forced to stay by her captor. The content of the letter has not been revealed.
The girl reappeared at the doorstep of her mother’s house on the night of July 20. It is not clear how Hernandez managed to escape from her abductor. Hernandez’s mother said the teenager had lost substantial weight and suffered from malnourishment.
A lot of questions still surround the case. It is not known whether other offences had been committed against Hernandez.
