Brazil plane crash: Presidential candidate Eduardo Campos killed in Santos
  • 9 years ago
Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos was killed when a plane carrying him and campaign staff crashed outside Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

The aircraft, a Cessna 560XL carrying five people and two pilots, was en route to Guaruja airport from Santos Dumont airport in Rio de Janeiro.

Weather conditions made it difficult for pilots to land the aircraft. According to the BBC, air traffic control lost contact with the plane after it failed to land at Guaruja.

The plane plunged into a densely populated area in Santos. It reportedly struck a three-storey building before hitting the ground. The crash site is about four kilometres from Guaruja airport.

Incumbent President Dilma Rousseff declared three days of national mourning in honour of Campos.
