North Korea fires rockets as Pope visits Seoul

North Korea fired five short-range rockets into the Sea of Japan, known as the East Sea in South Korea, on Thursday, just as Pope Francis arrived in Seoul for a five-day visit.

According to AFP, North Korea began launching rockets at 9:30 a.m. local time at a site near its eastern port of Wonsan. The rockets, with a maximum range of 220 kilometres, are presumed to have been fired from a 300-millimetre multiple rocket launcher.

Reuters reported that the last rocket was fired only 35 minutes before Pope Francis was due to arrive in Seoul. South Korean authorities said North Korea did not impose a no-fly or no-sail zone ahead of the launch, according to the Yonhap News Agency.
