Freak accident: Portland train runs over mother and son after wheelchair drives onto tracks

A mother and her son were killed following a collision with a Max Blue line train on Saturday afternoon in Portland, Oregon.

Bertha Kelly was a 66-year-old retired nurse to her son John Paul Kelly, a developmentally challenged 48-year-old who was visiting for the weekend.

The two were with her neighbor Sue at the Gresham City Hall train station waiting to go to The Farmer’s Market.

John Paul jumped into his mother’s lap out of excitement, but accidentally hit the toggle controller of his mother’s wheelchair. The motorized chair drove off the three-foot ledge of the train station platform onto the tracks.

Sue helplessly watched her best friend and her son stuck in between two coupled MAX carriages as a train rolled away from the station.

Bertha Kelly died instantly at the scene. Her son John Paul died two hours later at a nearby hospital.
