Ashya King’s parents sought proton beam therapy to treat his brain tumor

Ashya King, the 5-year-old British child with a brain tumor who was the subject of a Europe-wide search after his parents removed him from a hospital last week, was found with his family in Malaga, Spain.

Brett and Naghemeh King took Ashya from the University Hospital of Southampton after doctors refused to approve the proton beam treatment they were seeking for their son.

Ashya’s parents are being held in Soto de Real prison outside Madrid after they refused to consent to extradition to the UK on Sunday. They will remain in custody for at least another two days while a High Court judge in Madrid considers granting them bail.

“The intention of this couple has been to bring the child to Spain in order to sell a house they own in Malaga and to look for a superior treatment. That means these parents love their children, they are parents of another six children,” Juan Isidro Fernandez, lawyer for the couple, said in a Reuters report.

Traditional X-ray radiation treatment has been proven to eliminate cancerous tumors, but because the pattern of irradiation cannot be accurately controlled, healthy tissue is often damaged during treatment.

Protons, given their charge and mass, can be energised to specific velocities to target tissues of specific depth and volume. The particles can be directed to slow down, increasing their interaction with targeted tumor tissues.
