Ashya King’s parents arrested, boy found in Spain after international hunt: #FIGHT4ASHYA

5-year-old Ashya King’s parents have been arrested as public support for the family is grows. The story of Ashya King is raising the question: to what extent should parents be allowed to determine medical treatment for their children.
Ashya was diagnosed with brain cancer and received emergency surgery to remove a tumor about month ago. Traditional x-ray radiation therapy cannot be accurately targeted and it often damages healthy tissue. Alternatively, proton beam treatment offers the benefit of concentrated targeting of cancerous tumors.
Dr. Michael Marsh from University Hospital Southampton told the family that Ashyas tumor would not respond well to proton beam treatment. Ashya’s parents removed their son from the UK hospital and travelled to Spain to sell their vacation home in order to pay for their son’s treatment.
Ashya’s parents were arrested by Spanish authorities over the weekend and are fighting extradition back to Britain. Ashya is being treated in a Malaga hospital. An online petition calling for the release of Ashya’s parents has collected nearly 100,000 signatures.
