London beheading: old woman’s decapitated body found after reports of knife-wielding man

UK police found the beheaded body of an elderly woman at her house in a London suburb on Thursday after they were called to the area over reports of a knife-wielding man.
According to British media, panic erupted on Nightingale Road in Edmonton when neighbors reported a man with a long knife measuring roughly a foot long in the area. Some reports said the man may have attacked an animal, such as a cat or dog.
Freda Odame, 30, told the Telegraph that she saw a black man in his mid-20s when she heard a commotion and looked outside.
“I could see that he had a big curved knife, about the size of an arm's length and he was crouching as if frantically searching for something.”
Police distracted the suspect while other officers evacuated houses, Cdr Simon Letchford said in reporting by the BBC. Witnesses told local media that police used battering rams and broke down doors and windows to help people out and bring them to safety.
"Officers had to do everything they could to make other people safe and evacuate houses and put their lives on the line to make sure this individual did not cause further harm," Letchford said.
Meanwhile, authorities have not discovered a motive behind the man’s attack, but say it was not terrorist related, according to Detective Chief Inspector John Sandlin, who is leading the investigation.
The elderly woman who was decapitated has been identified as 82-year-old Palmira Silva, whom detectives say was probably of Italian descent.
