Solar storm alert: major solar flares are heading towards Earth

A powerful solar storm is expected to hit Earth this weekend although no major disruptions are expected.

The sun experienced two powerful explosions known as coronal mass ejections on Monday and Wednesday. The second of these solar flares was an X class flare, which is the most intense, according to CNN.

The combined energy from these two solar flares will likely hit Earth either on Friday or Saturday.

The solar storm will cause changes in Earth’s magnetic field that can lead to fluctuations in power grids, as well as some slight disturbances in radio and satellite transmissions, according to USA Today.

The solar storm is also expected to amplify displays of the Northern Lights across Canada and the northern U.S.
