A video of a rat stuck on a escalator handrail is going viral. Why? Because the short scene of a rat running an endless loop of handrail serves as the perfect metaphor for life’s futility.
The rat is trying to get somewhere, but is getting nowhere. We can all relate to that.
The rat attracts a crowd of curious onlookers and everyone is amused. The gawkers recognize the futility of the rat’s attempts to get ahead, because they experience such futility in their own lives. They can understand the rat’s situation, even though the rat itself cannot understand its own situation.
They are like a God to the rat as God is to us.
And such futility is not sad. It’s amusing. That rat is there for our amusement.
Except one lady doesn’t find the futility of the situation so funny. She understands what the rat represents and finds it cruel. She knocks the rat off the escalator handrail and it’s free.
Only it’s not free. It will just merely pursue its futile life in ways that are less obvious to everyone else.
