Stingray attack on Aussie teen leaves poison barb protruding from leg for 24 hours

Steve Irwin died in 2006 after a stingray attacked him and pierced his heart. Eight years later, Corey Jamieson, a 17-year-old Australian, has survived a stingray attack thanks to his recollection of Irwin’s death.

A stingray penetrated Jamieson’s leg last Thursday morning while the teen was swimming at Mindil Beach in Darwin. He remembered Steve Irwin’s death and, thinking Irwin had pulled out the barb, Jamieson opted to leave his in. Despite the pain, he knew the bleeding could worsen if he removed it.

He sought medical attention, but ended up waiting more than 24 hours due to a power outage in the hospital. Doctors were finally able to remove the barb during a 2-hour surgery.

What actually caused Irwin’s death was that the barb was plunged into his heart, but the mistake likely helped lead to Jamieson’s full recovery.
